Athrun Zala: The Record

In C.E. 61, Athrun Zala is sent by his father, Patrick Zala, the Plants' Chairman, to a preparatory school in Lunar city, Copernicus. There, he meets Kira Yamato, a fellow coordinator who Athrun befriends. For the next seven years, they become very close, and Athrun builds Kira a robotic bird, Torii or Birdie, right before he is asked to return to his family back on the Plants.

Upon his return in C.E. 68, his father reveals to him of an arranged engagement between Athrun and the Plant's pop idol, Lacus Clyne, daughter of Plant Supreme Council member Siegel Clyne. Athrun and Lacus are very kind to each other, despite their arranged engagement meant for political means more than anything else. Athrun builds her a pink robotic haro, the first of many, which Lacus never leaves without from that day on.

After the Bloody Valentine tragedy, which took his mother's life, Athrun joins the ZAFT Military to fight against the Earth Alliance, who threatens the lives of all Coordinators. Athrun graduates at the top of his class, making him a ZAFT Red, with expert skills with a pistol and superior skills with a mobile suit. He joins the Le Creuset Team to capture five prototype mobile suits from a secret Earth Alliance base on the neutral colony of Heliopolis. During the mission, Athrun captures the GAT-X303 Aegis, but finds himself fighting none other than Kira Yamato in one of the prototype suits. Taken a back, Athrun tries to figure out why his best friend appears to be with the Earth Forces, but before he can find the answer, Heliopolis is destroyed, causing the Le Creuset team to return to their ship to pursue the Archangel for the fifth prototype suit.

Athrun becomes anguished with the fact that he must either convince Kira to join them or shoot him down. Athrun is unable to do either. When Lacus goes missing, Athrun along with the rest of the Le Creuset team go out to search for her only to find that she is aboard the Archangel. After yelling at Kira for being with a ship that hold a civilian as a leverage to protect themselves, Kira decides to smuggle Lacus off the ship and return her to Athrun. Athrun again tries to convince Kira to come with him, but Kira refuses, and they leave their separate ways, both declaring that they will defeat the other the next time they meet.

Athrun later is promoted as head of the Le Creuset team, angering Yzak, a fellow comrade. Athrun is sent to Earth, but his transport gets shot down and Athrun lands with his Aegis Gundam on a remote island. While there, he is shot at by another soldier that was shot down as well. Athrun kicks the gun out of the soldier's hands, and gets ready to slit the soldiers throat, but is stopped when he discovers the soldier was a girl... Cagalli Yula Athha.

While stranded on the island, Athrun ties Cagalli up, but later releases her realizing she wasn't much of a threat and even amused him. The two of them talk around a fire about the war and their viewpoints, just to find that they couldn't agree on anything. When Athrun falls asleep, Cagalli steals his gun, but Athrun wakes up in time to catch her in the act. As Athrun tries to stop her by lunging at her, Cagalli throws the gun at him. Cagalli ends up insisting that she help dress his wounds. They are later rescued by their respective sides on opposite sides of the island, an attempt by both Athrun and Cagalli to hide the presence of the other from their parties.

Athrun leads the Le Creuset team to Orb where the Archangel is, but during the fight, Dearka Elsman gets captured by the Archangel, and Nicol is killed by Kira, enraging Athrun. When Athrun meets Kira in battle once again, bent on defeating him, he kills Kira's friend Tolle, who is in a skygrasper. Kira and Athrun duel each other, activate their seed modes, and Athrun self destructs his gundam on the Strike, ejecting himself just in time to save his life. Athrun is later found on the beach of Orb by Cagalli, who takes him to interrogate him at gunpoint about Kira. Athrun, very distraught, responds that he killed him. Cagalli lectures him that nothing will result from killing someone because they killed. Cagalli ends up giving Athrun her red amulet to protect him, saying she doesn't want anyone else to die, as Athrun leaves for Zaft

Athrun receives the Order of the Nebula upon his return as well as the ZGMF-X09A Justice for destroying the Strike. He is given the order to recover the stolen ZGMF-X10A Freedom, which was taken by someone with the help of Lacus Clyne, who had now been branded a traitor. Athrun, refusing to accept that Lacus has betrayed the Plants, searches for her. When he finds her, Lacus reveals that she has given a very alive Kira a better sword. Athrun calls Lacus a liar, saying Kira was dead. Lacus rebukes him, saying that he is alive, and then asks Athrun what he is fighting for. She declares that she will become his enemy if he is fighting for his orders or father's rewards. Athrun ends up saving Lacus from assassination, and later leaves to confront Kira.

Athrun returns to the Earth with the Justice and ends up helping Kira against the Calamity, the Forbidden, and the Raider. Afterwards, Athrun meets with Kira to talk things through. Athrun stays with Kira, Cagalli, and Dearka and follows them into space after the self-detonation of Onogoro. Athrun remains an ally to the Archangel and the Kusanagi, but leaves for the Plants to confront his father about why they were fighting this war. His father demands the location of the Justice and the Freedom, but Athrun never answers. Athrun rebels against his father when he learns the truth that his father plans to destroy all the naturals. Athrun is shot and placed under custody.

During an attempt to escape, Clyne Faction member DaCosta aids Athrun, and they flee to the Eternal, now commanded by Andrew Waltfeld and none other than Lacus Clyne. Together, they flee the the stolen Eternal, but are engaged by Zaft fighters. Kira comes just in time to save the Eternal.

Athrun officially defects from the Zaft military and joins the Three Ship Alliance against both Zaft anf the Earth Sphere. Athrun starts to develop a romantic relationship with Cagalli, who is now aware that Kira is her twin brother. Right before the last battle of the Bloody Valentine War, Cagalli reveals that she is going out to fight to protect her brother and to protect Athrun. Athrun, overwhelmed, tells Cagalli that they can protect each other, and then kisses her. Athrun heads off to fight with his friends, destroying several suits including the Calamity. He heads into Jachin Due with Cagalli beside to confront his father for the last time. He finds his father, shot and dying. His father commands him to shoot the GENESIS towards the Earth in his dying breath. Athrun instead stops the GENESIS by self detonating Justice within it, escaping with a demandent Cagalli. Athrun's actions end the war, and he and Cagalli head off in the Strike Rouge to find Kira, who has just defeated the crazed Rau Le Creuset. Athrun and Cagalli find Kira, and are filled with tears of joy in the last scenes of Gundam Seed.
