Athrun Zala: Relationships

Athrun & Kira:
Athrun and Kira are childhood friends that were closer than brothers. Athrun even presented Kira with Birdie right before he was sent back to the Plants with his family. They were the closest of friends, and knew each other better than they knew themselves. However, fate leads the two on separate sides of the war, each fighting to protect the people they love. Neither can really seem to understand what the other is doing, which leads to their anger and resolve to destroy the other. When each of their dearest friends is murdered by the other, they go after each other in a duel to the death. However, they both survive and later confront the other for the first time, person to person. Athrun starts doubting what he should be fighting for and follows Kira to discover that answer, even though it leads him at odds with his own father. They fight alongside each other to end the first war, but are once again on opposite sides when Athrun rejoins Zaft during the second war. After some sense is knocked into Athrun's head, literally, Athrun rejoins his best friend once again, fighting for something he truely believes in. Even through the misunderstandings, Athrun never loses faith in Kira, and is always distraught when he is sent to fight against him.

Athrun & Cagalli:
Athrun first met Cagalli on a deserted island after he was shot down. Neither expected to meet someone that would change their life, and at the time, they never dreamed they would meet again. After all, they were on opposite sides. As their paths brought them closer together, they grew closer to each other romantically, even though, there were sparks between them from the beginning. Athrun's feelings came to the surface first, which was evidenced when Cagalli jumped into Kira's arms after her father died. Cagalli started to support him revealing her feelings in the process, which brought them together at the end of the first war. Afterwards, Athrun followed Cagalli to Orb under the disguise of Alex Dino, Cagalli's personal bodyguard. Athrun ends up proposing to Cagalli, despite the touchy issue of Cagalli's betrothal to Yuuna Seiran. Pressures of another war draws the two apart however. Athrun leaves Orb to investigate the Plants, but finds himself back with Zaft. When Cagalli's abduction from her wedding reaches Athrun, he becomes devastated, which pushes him further from her, mostly out of pain and hurt. Near the end of the second war, Athrun and Cagalli make amends with each other, apologizing desperately to the other. Despite this, Cagalli takes off Athrun's ring. This hurts Athrun again, but smiles through it stating that it wouldn't matter, so long as their dreams were the same. The two seemed to realize that they couldn't be together, not yet anyway, not until they found how to bring the world of the naturals and coordinators together. The two are still very much in love with each other, and probably will end up will each other in the future.

Athrun & Lacus:
Athrun's relationship with Lacus started out as a political engagement that slowly evolved into a lasting friendship of admiration and respect. As fiancees, they hardly spent any time together, and although they were kindred, they weren't particularly close. Most of the time, they really didn't know how to act around each other when they did have time together. Lacus is particularly fond of the haros, especially the pink haro, that Athrun made for her. However, as their differences grew, they quickly fell apart. The two remained close friends that understood the other rather well through it all. Athrun believes in Lacus and Lacus supports Athrun, always bringing his lost mind back onto the track that Athrun wants to be on in his heart.

Athrun & Nicol:
Of the Le Creuset and Zala teams, Nicol was the closest to Athrun. They always seemed to side with each other against Yzak and Dearka. This instantly revealed a tight bond between the two. Athrun also felt like Nicol understood him better than the rest, which was evidenced when the two had a talk about the war and what they were really fighting for. Athrun was highly devastated when Nicol was killed by Athrun's best friend Kira, which nearly resulted in Athrun successfully killing Kira in revenge.

Athrun & Dearka:
Athrun and Dearka don't really seem to have much of a friendship. Their relationship is more like a conflicted comradeship. They hardly agree on anything, yet they do share a sense of comradeship and a similar dream for their home. However, Dearka's relationship with Athrun is pretty much in the background.

Athrun & Yzak:
Unlike Athrun's relationship with Dearka, his relationship with Yzak is probably the most obviously aggravated one. From the start, the two seemed to always be at odds with each other, which is actually very typical when two natural born leaders are placed on the same team. A major source of their conflict was their constant disagreement in how to execute missions. Despite this, deep down, the two really just want the other's respect, but their brotherly rivalry seems to be the other way they can show that respect.

Athrun & his father:
Athrun's relationship with his father is the most unfortunate of all the relationships within the Gundam Seed/Destiny Universe. It seems obvious that the two truly loved each once upon a time, before the death of Athrun's mother. Although, it highly effected them both, Athrun's father went insane with the death of his wife. His father became bent on revenge to the point that he was going to drag his son and the whole world with him. Unfortunately, this rage drove Athrun's father to regard Athrun as nothing more than a soldier that would play an important role in his conquest to rid the world of Naturals. This tension deepened to a damaging level when Athrun learned of his father's true intentions, and Athrun couldn't save his father before his father passed on. The memory of his father continues to haunt Athrun.
