Gundam Seed is a gundam series that takes place in the Cosmic Era during a tension filled time between naturally born humans or 'Naturals' and genetically altered "Coordinators." A war erupts between the Earth Alliance, composed of the Naturals, and ZAFT, an alliance between the Coordinator filled Plants, or Cosmic Era's space colonies. The conflict arises when many radical Naturals, jealous of the enhanced abilities of Coordinators due to genetic engineering, nuke a section of the Plants, destroying millions of lives and sending the Plants into the mindset of war. This fateful day was later known as Junius Seven. The result, war. Two childhood friends, both Coordinators, are hurled in the middle of it on opposite sides, both trying to protect the people they care about.

Kira Yamato stumbles upon an Earth Alliance Military secret while trying to save his friends and a young girl he had just met during a Zaft attack on his home colony, Heliopolis. He ends up helping Earth Alliance Officer Murrue Ramius with the GAT-X105 Strike, the only gundam not stolen by Zaft forces, and suddenly finds himself fighting against his childhood friend, Athrun Zala, a Zaft Redcoat and ace pilot. During the scramble to save the gundam and the Earth Alliance's new secret battleship, the Archangel, Heliopolis is destroyed, landing Kira Yamato and his friends, now aware of top military secrets, in the middle of an Earth Alliance operation. The Archangel sets out to escape the Le Creuset Team of Zaft, who now have the four stolen gundams in their possession.

A struggle to find what one should truly fight for and how to find the right way to go about it develops as the four Seeds slowly discover that they really do have the power to change the course of the future.
